“Victims of irony won't find much to smirk along to with Portland's Blind Pilot. "Go On, Say It," was their breakout single and the centerpiece of 3 Rounds and a Sound (2008) and it was the kind of song you could imagine blaring from Lloyd Dobler's boom-box if he'd been an indie-folk millennial. Which isn't to say that guitarist/singer Israel Nebeker and drummer Ryan Dobrowski get by on plaintive sincerity alone. Everything is colored with hooky melodies and precise instrumentation — a vibraphone tap or muffled horn here, a delicate banjo filigree there. They went from touring on bicycles to appearing at Lollapalooza in under a year, and when you see their live show (backed by four touring members to recreate the records' complexity) it becomes apparent why.”
