The summer film season is upon us — and, as always, so are the attendant sequels, reboots, and mega-budget froth. Yes, the blockbuster season has its charms, but we'll spare you the populist pretense: the Chicago Underground Film Festival is the oasis for which we cinephiles yearn this time of year. Among the feature-length highlights are the omnibus Fourth Dimension, with segments from Harmony Korine and Alexsei Fedorchenko (Silent Souls); Andrew Bird: Fever Year, a 2011 documentary of the cultishly adored indie-pop singer-songwriter; and Portuguese mind-bender Palaces of Pity. Don't sleep on the short-film programs, either, home to some of the most inventive conceptual daring of CUFFs past.
